• 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Delgiorno -- Dark and disturbing. : 30+ years since my first reading, this Kafka metaphor still made my skin crawl. Never being confronted with his crime or punishment, the Condemned Man was to be executed in a fashion that would reveal his offense to the world while also keeping him from that knowledge. A sociopath has designed and and operates the execution device, a Soldier blindly follows hideous orders, the Condemned Man stoically awaits his fate, while the Traveler is bewildered by the process and his impact on its outcome. The themes including unjust administration of the law, cruel and excessive punishment, adherence to abhorrent tradition, etc., leave the reader with much to ponder and a rich source of nightmare material. Kafka catches the cold hearted cruelty of the officer, the subservience of the soldier, the fear of the convicted man and the sympathy of the traveler without being sentimental, with a surprising but logical ending. A condemned man that does not know even the charges much less his sentence. A machine that inscribes the core criminal moto of the sentence to the body of the condemned for hours until death occurs... That's it. Sometimes we dream and ask for a fast solution but justice needs time to be delivered in an appropriate manner. The question that still holds is how much? The little novel is a brief exercise in entrapment; the careless reader will be lured into a sense of vengefulness towards the Officer and be captured by a twisted sense of justice towards the Officer's final fate. Distracted by the imagery of the device and frustration ("...but if I had been there, I definitely would have blah blah") the Traveller's archetypal bystander status, you might just find yourself advocating for torture.
